High-risk Pregnancies

Most pregnant women require regular prenatal checkups with a general OB/GYN throughout pregnancy. But if you have an underlying medical condition or chronic health issues, you may be at higher risk of complications during pregnancy. This could mean you require more checkups or additional monitoring. Our maternal-fetal medical specialists, also known as perinatologists, are experienced in various issues pregnant women may face. They provide advanced care every step of the way.
WMCHealth has the only Level IV Regional Perinatal Center (RPC) in the region. The RPC is the hub of a network of hospitals and clinics working together to ensure that women with high-risk pregnancies in New York have access to the best and most advanced services available.
These specialists care for:
- Expectant mothers with pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease
- Expectant mothers with pregnancy-related health issues, such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia
Our OB/GYNs care for healthy expectant mothers who are or have experienced:
- Recurrent miscarriages
- Carrying multiple fetuses
- Preterm labor and delivery
- Women over the age of 40
- Family history of genetic disorders
- Premature ruptures of membranes
You may also be referred to a perinatologist after giving birth if you:
- Develop an infection
- Have excessive vaginal bleeding
- Experience another type of health complication due to pregnancy, labor, or delivery
Perinatologists also can help coordinate multidisciplinary neonatal services the baby may need before or after birth. Possible problems and treatment can be established while the baby is still in utero with:
- Amniocentesis: a procedure used to diagnose possible health conditions
- Diagnostic sonograms: imaging used to detect physical abnormalities
- Chorionic villus sampling: a test that can help diagnose possible genetic disorders
As an academic medical center, our doctors are dedicated to independent and collaborative research that allows us to provide the latest advances in healthcare for women and their babies.
Preconception Counseling
Even if you don’t have any underlying health conditions, if you’re planning to become pregnant, it’s a good idea to schedule a preconception counseling appointment. This appointment with your doctor will allow you to reduce potential risks or complications during pregnancy. The counseling will generally cover:
- Lifestyle
- Family history
- Current and/or previous medical conditions
Based upon these discussions, your doctor may adjust current treatments or suggest lifestyle changes such as quitting tobacco use, reducing alcohol consumption, and eating a healthier diet.
Our team is here to provide you with all the tools you need for a healthy pregnancy and to see you through a healthy labor and delivery.
