When Is Surgery Needed?

Gynecologic surgery is any surgical procedure that involves the female pelvic region, including the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva. Surgery may also be needed for the muscles and tissue that form the pelvic floor.

Numerous conditions may require gynecologic surgery, such as:

Types of Gynecologic Surgery

The type of gynecological surgery you need will depend on your condition and its severity. Our doctors and care teams will discuss all available options and work to decide what would best fit your needs.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is a procedure that removes the uterus and, if needed, surrounding tissue. A hysterectomy may be recommended as a treatment for:

  • Cancer
  • Fibroids
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Uterus-lining conditions
  • Abnormal heavy vaginal bleeding

Gynecologic surgeons can take numerous different surgical approaches to perform a hysterectomy, including:

  • Vaginal hysterectomy: The uterus is removed through an incision at the top of the vagina.
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy: The procedure is performed through a small incision in the belly button.
  • Robot-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy: The surgeon uses robotic arms to control instruments.
  • Abdominal hysterectomy: In this procedure, the uterus is removed through a larger incision in the abdomen.

Minimally Invasive Pelvic Floor Surgery

Many pelvic floor disorders can be treated with minimally invasive surgeries that can relieve pain and other symptoms. Many minimally invasive procedures utilize laparoscopic or robotic techniques and allow surgeons to perform complex procedures with small incisions. These techniques help reduce risk as well as speed up recovery times.

WMCHealth provides the most advanced treatment for pelvic floor disorders, including:

  • Hysteropexy: This procedure suspends the uterus and is used to treat uterine prolapse.
  • Sacrocolpopexy: This operation is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse by lifting the organs back into place with surgical mesh.
  • Sacral neuromodulation for incontinence: A pacemaker-like device is surgically implanted to help with bladder function.
  • Midurethral sling: A mesh strap is placed under the urethra to treat incontinence.
  • Native tissue and mesh procedures: A woman’s own tissue is used instead of surgical mesh to treat conditions like pelvic organ prolapse.
