The Level 1 Trauma Center at WMCHealth’s Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is an advanced, dedicated pediatric trauma center accredited by the American College of Surgeons and New York State, providing emergency and critical care for children in our community.

Our highly trained pediatricians and fully equipped facility are renowned throughout the region as being the first choice for pediatric trauma care, handling the most complex conditions and severe injuries.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital has the area’s only advanced Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU is an 18-bed unit that provides care for medical and surgical patients requiring intensive care. The PICU trauma team treats children from newborn to young adulthood, using the most advanced technologies in a compassionate, family-centered environment.

With a 40-year history of providing critical care for children, we are committed to all aspects of trauma care and have specialized expertise in neurosurgical and orthopedic care.

Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department is home to pediatric physicians with advanced training in emergency medicine and trauma care. They provide care for all emergent conditions affecting children and teens, including pediatric trauma, stroke, seizures, brain injury, cardiac concerns, and more. Our dedicated respiratory therapy team has extensive experience dealing with pediatric patients who require respiratory support services. The Pediatric Trauma Service is led by specialty-trained and board-certified attending pediatric surgeons.

Pediatric Trauma Conditions We Treat

While we hope your family never needs trauma care, it’s important to know who you can turn to if an accident or injury does happen. Although the trauma doctors and nurses at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital are focused on providing immediate care, we never forget that a calm and confident approach is at the heart of what we do.

Trauma-related Bone Fractures

Common childhood bone and joint injuries include long bone fractures, foot and hand fractures, pelvic fractures, and spine fractures. Spinal injuries are particularly critical—the WMCHealth team has expertise in treating spinal cord injuries and skull fractures.

Stroke

While rare, stroke in children can occur. A stroke happens when blood flow to an area of the brain is blocked. Certain health conditions in children can cause pediatric stroke.

Seizures

A sudden change in brain wave activity can cause a seizure. The most common seizure disorder is epilepsy. WMCHealth’s neurology and neurosurgical specialists have extensive experience in providing epilepsy care, including surgical procedures.

Brain Injuries

While they should always be taken seriously, brain injuries can be mild, moderate or severe. Testing for the level of severity is important to determine how the injury might impact the child’s development. WMCHealth is fully equipped to treat pediatric brain injuries, including concussions.

Cardiac Concerns

Sudden cardiac arrest in kids is a growing concern, especially among athletes. Our Trauma Center can quickly assess these cases and provide emergency cardiac care. We have also partnered with our local communities to raise awareness on sudden cardiac arrest.

Trauma Survivors Network

The feelings of trauma can live on far beyond a child’s hospital stay. We are committed to continuing care through the American Trauma Society’s Trauma Survivors Network to provide our patients and families with access to resources that meet the psychosocial needs of patients and their families following a traumatic event.
