Anyone who has heard the “pop” of an ACL tear knows the pain that can come along with it. With an ACL injury, you need treatment and relief quickly. You’ll also want reassurance that you can return to the activities you love. The orthopedic surgeons at WMCHealth are highly skilled and have access to the most advanced techniques for ACL repair, including ACL surgery and reconstruction. They are ready to guide you on this healing journey.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) joins the thigh bone to the shin bone. It runs diagonally through the knee, stabilizing the knee joint and allowing the lower leg to move back and forth. The ACL can be torn partially or fully.

ACL injuries and tears are some of the most common orthopedic injuries and are becoming more and more common, especially in young athletes. Females are at high risk of having a tear, and playing on artificial turf also increases risk.

ACL repair is often needed after a knee injury is sustained during skiing, football, or tennis. An ACL tear typically causes intense pain, swelling, limited movement, and a “popping” sound. If you have an ACL injury, your knee may be very unstable, and you may be unable to move your leg in specific ways.

ACL Repair Options

The care teams at WMCHealth provide a wide range of treatment options for ACL injuries.

Nonsurgical Treatments

Depending on the severity of your injury, nonsurgical treatments may be your first course of action. Physical therapy can help strengthen the muscles around the knee. Your doctor may also advise that you modify certain activities to allow your body time to heal and build new muscles. Bracing may be used to help you participate in activities while keeping your knee stable.

Surgical Treatments

If nonsurgical treatments are unsuccessful or you have a full tear, you may need ACL reconstruction, where the ACL will be surgically removed and replaced with a segment of tendon. This may be taken from another area of the knee or from donor tissue.

ACL Surgical Recovery

Post ACL surgery requires physical therapy to restore stability and function. There is no set timeframe or course for recovery and return to play. It could be a year or longer before the knee’s stability and function is fully restored. A longer recovery period may reduce the risk of re-injury.

The multidisciplinary approach of WMCHealth care teams promotes comprehensive and full recovery of ACL injuries, allowing you to participate in activities safely.
