As a neurologist at WMCHealth specializing in multiple sclerosis (MS), I know how vital it is for patients to have clear information. Understanding MS can improve decision-making and quality of life.
1. MS is more common in women than men
Women are three times more likely to develop MS than men, and most diagnosed in individuals between the ages of 20-50. While the reason for this is not clearly understood, it is important to consider MS in women who have new neurologic symptoms.
2. The causes of MS involve multiple factors
MS develops through a complex interplay of genetics, environment and immune system dysfunction:
- Genetic predisposition: MS is not directly inherited like simple genetic traits but rather involves many genes that each contribute small amounts to overall risk.
- Environmental factors: People living farther from the equator have higher rates of MS, suggesting vitamin D and sun exposure may play a role.
- Previous viral infections: Exposure to certain infections, particularly Epstein-Barr virus, appear play a role in MS risk.
- Lifestyle factors: Smoking is associated with higher MS risk and faster progression.
While you cannot prevent MS, maintaining adequate vitamin D levels, not smoking and managing other health conditions are just a few ways to improve your clinical course. The disease is not contagious and cannot be transmitted through contact.
3. Safe and healthy pregnancy is very possible
In the past, the safety of pregnancy in MS was questioned. However, we know today that women with MS can have safe and healthy pregnancies, but you need to plan with your doctor as you think about MS treatments alongside your family planning goals.
4. Exercise is beneficial, not harmful
Regular, appropriate physical activity is highly recommended for MS patients. Exercise helps maintain strength, flexibility and balance. Working with healthcare providers can help develop safe routines tailored to individual abilities.
5. Treatments have advanced significantly
Modern disease-modifying therapies come in various forms—oral medications, infusions and injections—that reduce inflammation and decrease relapses. Some newer treatments only require dosing a few times yearly. The outcomes we expect for MS patients have improved drastically over the years.
WMCHealth takes a comprehensive approach to symptom management with medications for specific symptoms, physical therapy, mental health support, and other specialists with experience caring for people living with MS through our multidisciplinary care team.
