WMCHealth orthopedics integrates advanced technologies into determining your care plan to ensure you receive the most accurate diagnosis and treatment. We use the EOSedge to capture high-quality imaging to best understand your condition. Then, we can create an orthopedic treatment plan—including pre-surgical planning and post-surgical assessments—tailored for your body’s unique alignment.

What Is the EOSedge?

The EOSedge takes full-body X-rays to show how the bones and muscles of your back, hips, and legs work together. This innovative imaging system is the first technology of its kind, providing 2D and 3D full-body images both vertically and horizontally. The EOSedge is a safe alternative to traditional imaging that provides more precise measurements of your bones and muscles.

Is the EOSedge Right for Me?

The EOSedge features an open-frame design, ensuring easy and safe accessibility for individuals of all heights, weights, and mobility levels. The EOSedge is ideal for you, if:

  • You can walk or stand with support.
  • You or your child may require frequent scans over time for chronic conditions, like scoliosis or leg-length inequality.
  • Your doctor has recommended surgery. For example, during spine surgery, EOSedge technology improves accuracy and precision of screw and implant placement.

When Is the EOSedge Needed?

The EOSedge helps doctors more quickly and accurately diagnose and treat orthopedic conditions such as:

  • Scoliosis
  • Kyphosis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Leg-length inequality

Radiation Protection

At WMCHealth, we strive to limit your exposure to radiation whenever possible. The EOSEdge uses radiation doses aligned with As Low As Diagnostically Acceptable (ALADA) principles: this means 20 times less radiation than a CT scan and nine times less than a computed radiography (a conventional, digital X-ray).

What to Expect During an EOSedge Full Scan

Just before your EOSedge full scan, you may be asked to change into a paper apron or cloth gown. Because the dose of radiation is so low, you won’t likely need to wear a protective lead apron.

During an EOSedge full scan, you will stand or sit up straight inside an open-frame cabin. The motorized platform will ensure you are in the proper position. One vertical and one horizontal X-ray beam will scan your entire body in both directions and produce images for your doctor. The entire process is about 20 seconds.

Unlike conventional X-ray imaging, you won’t likely need to be repositioned for additional scans, as the two simultaneous scans provide all necessary imaging in one pass. Because the EOSedge full scan is performed while you’re upright, your doctor can observe how the weight of gravity affects your body. This means your care plan will focus on improving your practical, day-to-day movement.
