Dr. Al-Mufti is one of the few triple-trained, board-certified neurologists, neurointensivist, and neuroendovascular surgeons in the country.
He joined Westchester Medical Center in 2018 from Rutgers University - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he served as the director of neuroendovascular surgery (neurology). He completed fellowship training in neuroendovascular surgery at Rutgers University and Neurocritical Care from Columbia and Weil Cornell Universities following his neurology residency at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Al-Mufti has a special interest and expertise in the performance of cutting-edge neuroendovascular techniques for the minimally invasive management of cerebrovascular conditions. This spectrum of disease includes aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, as well as dural, cavernous, spinal fistulae and acute ischemic stroke.
As the Assistant Dean for GME Research, Associate Chair of Neurology for research at New York Medical College, and an Associate Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Radiology, Dr. Al-Mufti has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and he oversees research in the Brain and Spine Institute. Dr. Al-Mufti is the Director of the CNS Neuroendovsacular Surgery Fellowship and has mentored more than 100 students, residents and fellows. He has represented the WMC Brain and Spine Institute at many major cerebrovascular conferences around the world. He has designed and led multiple major national and international clinical trials and currently serves as National and International PI for multiple major funded multi-site trials.
Dr. Al-Mufti has continuously served on multiple scientific and educational committees of the American Academy of Neurology and Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology and the Neurocritical Care society. He is the co-chair of the Interventional Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of the Vascular and Interventional Neurology and is a member of the core executive committee of Mission Thrombectomy, a non-profit organization advocating for making mechanical thrombectomy available on a global level.
Dr. Al-Mufti has been named Castle Connolly's Top Doctor and within Marquis Who's Who in Medicine. Working through wars for several years with Doctors Without Borders afforded him the unique opportunity to treat a wide variety of patients under some of the direst situations. Few physicians are fortunate enough to have been exposed to the depth, breadth and sheer complexity of working under the stress of war. "I attribute my dedication to my patients' outcomes largely to my war experiences. A patient must be considered as a person first and foremost – and should be treated as if they were a family member." Dr. Al-Mufti is a firm believer in a collaborative multidisciplinary approach to patient care. He sees his role as being a combination of physician and educator and that patient education and joint decision-making with patients and families is paramount.
