Westchester Medical Center Health Network Welcomes Kelly Hutcheson, MD, MBA, as Director of Ophthalmology

Dr. Hutcheson will lead the ophthalmology team, enhancing diagnostic and treatment services and working with community partners to serve the advanced care ophthalmology needs of patients across the Hudson Valley region.

Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) welcomes ophthalmologist Kelly Hutcheson, MD, MBA, as the Director of Ophthalmology, responsible for the continued growth and development of the ophthalmology programs at Westchester Medical Center, Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and MidHudson Regional Hospital.

Dr. Hutcheson also serves as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at New York Medical College.

In her new role, Dr. Hutcheson will lead the ophthalmology team, enhancing diagnostic and treatment services and working with community partners to serve the advanced care ophthalmology needs of patients across the Hudson Valley region. She will also oversee the academic aspects of the clinical practice and the hospitals' ophthalmology residency program.

Board certified in ophthalmology, Dr. Hutcheson brings to WMCHealth clinical expertise in neurofibromatosis, adults with double vision, and pediatric and neonatal eye disease. She also has a passion for program-building and being innovative, bringing together people and programs to optimize the quality of care provided to patients.

Prior to joining WMCHealth, Dr.Hutcheson served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Sidra Medical and Research Center and Weill Cornell School of Medicine in Doha, Qatar for three years. There, she built the ophthalmology division for a 250-bed children's hospital and tertiary care outpatient specialty center. In this role, she oversaw not only the creation of the program, but also recruited physicians and staff, provided patient care, and taught medical residents and students.

Dr. Hutcheson previously served as a senior attending physician at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. While there, she established a surgical humanitarian teaching program for ophthalmology residents and fellows to provide eye care to underserved patients. She was an active member of the academic community and also served as an advocate for children's eye care. Prior to moving to Washington, she was Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, where she developed initiatives in education and led several grant-funded research programs.

After earning a medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Dr. Hutcheson completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Florida School of Medicine in Gainesville and a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. She also earned an MBA from George Washington University School of Business.

Dr. Hutcheson's approach to patient care is family-centered and prioritizes open communication and compassion. She also enjoys humanitarian work and last volunteered in Ethiopia in partnership with SEE International, a medical organization that sponsors ophthalmology outreach around the world.

Dr. Hutcheson lives in Westchester County and enjoys traveling internationally. Her travels have taken her to total of 45 different countries thus far.
