Transforming Lives: Vincent’s Journey with Same-Day Joint Replacement

Posted By: Advancing Care

Vincent Curcio, a 59-year-old resident of Blauvelt, has battled chronic knee pain for years due to severe arthritis. Despite trying various treatments and therapies, his quality of life and mobility continued to decline.

Curcio was no stranger to joint pain; he had undergone right knee replacement surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital two years prior. When chronic pain developed in his left knee, Curcio sought consultation with the orthopedic team once again.

After meeting with Arup Bhadra, MD, his orthopedic surgeon, and learning that his arthritis had progressed to bone-on-bone contact, Curcio opted for same-day surgery on his left knee.

Approaching the procedure with a mix of nerves and hope, Curcio trusted his medical team. The surgery went smoothly, utilizing MAKO Robotic Assistance for total knee replacement.

Remarkably, Curcio woke up with minimal pain and a new knee joint. Thanks to precise nerve blocks and intravenous sedation, he walked with the help of a physical therapist just two hours after surgery. Throughout the day, Curcio received excellent care from nurses and physical therapists, helping a smoother recovery.

By evening, he was back home, following postoperative instructions diligently, including exercises and physical therapy sessions. Each day brought noticeable improvements in mobility and comfort.

Curcio looks forward to resuming his 35-year role as a volunteer firefighter. The same-day joint replacement surgery has given him a pain-free future and a renewed lease on life.

Dr. Bhadra emphasized the safety of same-day joint replacements, made possible by advancements in surgical techniques, robotics, multimodal pain control, and postoperative management. Curcio expressed gratitude for his care team and the unwavering support of his family.
