Medical Villages: A Giant Leap Forward

Posted By: Advancing Care

WMCHealth announces investment in bringing care close to Hudson Valley residents.

When the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) made a promise earlier this year to develop two medical villages aimed at improving access to healthcare, the plan was to transform Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis and HealthAlliance: Mary’s Avenue Campus in Kingston —  both members of  (WMCHealth) — into state-of-the-art medical hubs that were one-stop shops for inpatient and outpatient care.

It was an ambitious goal, but in September, WMCHealth took a spectacular leap forward, announcing a $170 million investment in network facilities for the two medical village projects.

“We are delivering on promises made to our neighbors in Kingston and Port Jervis to deliver the highest quality of care as close to their homes as possible. With these projects, we will change the healthcare and economic landscape in these communities,” says Michael Israel, President and CEO of WMCHealth.

For Port Jervis, the projects include a brand-new imaging suite, bariatric center, wellness center, fully renovated lobby and entryway, and expanded emergency department,  just to name a few. In addition, the hospital will become the centerpiece for the medical village with primary care, dental care, and education workshops, as well as other services. Mary Leahy, MD, CEO of Bon Secours Charity Health System, says, “With this extensive project, we are proud to begin the process of transforming the health outcomes of Port Jervis residents, as well as those from nearby areas. Together with our valuable partners, we look forward to advancing care for our community and making it stronger, more vital, and economically sound.”

In Kingston, HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus will undergo an extensive renovation to the existing hospital building and the addition of a new 110,000 square-foot tower, which will house a brand-new emergency room, endoscopy center and ICU. In addition, the hospital’s Broadway Campus is being transformed to house the medical village.

While the Kingston and Port Jervis projects may vary in scope and size, both Leahy and HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley CEO David Scarpino are equally committed to advancing their hospitals’ transformations. To this end, Scarpino says, “When the renovation is complete, Kingston will be one of the most impressive and technologically advanced hospitals in the nation.”
