I’ve Started Developing Varicose Veins. Now What?
If you have unsightly or painful varicose veins on your legs, you are not alone. According to Michael L. Schwartz, MD, FACS, Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), approximately 50 percent of the population will develop varicose veins in their lifetime.

Dr. Schwartz explains that a simple lifestyle change — including weight loss, exercise, leg elevation and wearing compression hose — can prevent varicose veins from progressing to a point where surgery is required. “For those patients who need or prefer surgical treatment, recovery is pretty quick. You’re on your feet right after the procedure and can return to work in a day or two,” says Dr. Schwartz, adding that most vein procedures are covered by insurance.
If you wish to have your varicose veins treated, Schwartz suggests taking the time to do your research and contact your primary care doctor for advice.
