How Can I Deal With Holiday Stress?

Posted By: Advancing Care

“Increased demands and high expectations make the holiday season a stressful time for numerous individuals,” says Sheila Magee, LCSW, Director of Behavioral Health Services at Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of WMCHealth. “It’s important to acknowledge how you feel and recognize what is triggering those feelings and to plan appropriately to help manage the variety of stressors that may occur,” she adds. Here, Magee shares some useful tips to maximize your enjoyment of the holidays.

Plan ahead! It is important to schedule activities in a way that works with your life.

Be real with yourself. The holidays do not have to be perfect, so set realistic expectations for yourself and family.

Accept how you are feeling. It’s okay to take time to yourself during stressful times; just 10 minutes alone, without distractions, may be refreshing. It is also okay for you to cry, laugh or smile during these times.

Say no! Empower yourself by saying “No” and preserving your time.

Take a moment to be present. Breathe. Take a moment for you to enjoy the small joys that the holidays bring.
