WMCHealth Commemorates ‘Donate Life Month’
Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), home to the Hudson Valley’s only transplant center, observed national “Donate Life Month” in April by welcoming back former patients and families who have given or received the gift of organ donation.
Events on network campuses, including flagship Westchester Medical Center and affiliate MidHudson Regional Hospital, celebrated the contributions of donors while raising awareness about the critical need for organ donation. These events included flag-raising ceremonies at Westchester Medical Center and MidHudson Regional Hospital; a Kidney Donor Reunion Celebration at Westchester Medical Center; and a Blue and Green Day, during which hospital staff dressed in blue and green, the symbolic colors of organ donation.
Westchester Medical Center performs kidney, liver, heart, pancreas, bone marrow and corneal transplants for patients across the region and beyond. The program has transplanted more than 2,300 kidneys and more than 770 livers. Additionally, more than 220 life-saving heart transplants have been performed. For younger patients facing serious conditions, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, also a member of WMCHealth, offers pediatric kidney, bone marrow and corneal transplant programs.
