WMCHealth Cardiology Director Publishes Study on New Treatment Benchmark

A study published by Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) Director of Cardiology Julio Panza, MD, in the New England Journal of Medicine, concluded that a common test currently used to assess whether patients should undergo bypass surgery is unreliable as the sole basis for making an informed decision.

Assessing the results of a 20-year investigative effort, Dr. Panza and his team contend that the Myocardial Viability Test should be only part of a comprehensive and personalized assessment of each patient’s situation and that patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy should base their decision to opt for the procedure on the extent of their coronary disease.

“We hope the findings of this study will be utilized to better understand the complexity of the clinical problem in this high-risk population of patients and help define the patients’ needs for cardiac bypass surgery,” said Dr. Panza.
